Why Is My Computer So Slow? 5 Common Causes and Fixes
There's nothing more frustrating than a slow computer when you're trying to get work done. Whether it's taking ages to start up, freezing when you open programs, or just generally feeling sluggish, a slow computer can waste hours of your day.
As an IT specialist based in Edinburgh, I see slow computers almost every week. The good news? Most of the time, the fix is simpler than you think. Let me walk you through the five most common causes and what we can do about them.
1. Too Many Programs Running at Startup
This is the number one culprit. When you turn on your computer, dozens of programs might be trying to start up at the same time, even ones you never use.
The fix: We can disable unnecessary startup programs. On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, click the Startup tab, and disable anything you don't need running immediately. On Mac, go to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items.
2. Your Hard Drive Is Nearly Full
If your hard drive is more than 85% full, your computer will slow down. It's like trying to find a book in a library that's completely stuffed to the ceiling.
The fix: Delete old files you don't need, empty your downloads folder, and clear temporary files. If you're not sure what's safe to delete, that's exactly where I can help. We can also upgrade to a faster SSD if needed.
3. You Have Malware or Viruses
Nasty software running in the background can absolutely tank your computer's performance. Signs include random popups, your browser acting weird, or programs you didn't install appearing.
The fix: Run a proper antivirus scan with Windows Defender or Malwarebytes. If the infection is serious, professional help is worth it to avoid losing important files.
4. Your Computer Needs More Memory (RAM)
If you're trying to run modern software on an older computer, you might simply not have enough RAM. It's like trying to juggle too many balls at once.
The fix: Upgrading RAM is often cheap and makes a huge difference. Most laptops can be upgraded, and I can check if yours is compatible.
5. Your Hard Drive Is Failing
This is the serious one. If your hard drive is on its way out, you'll notice slowdowns, strange noises, or files disappearing. This needs immediate attention before you lose everything.
The fix: Back up your data immediately and replace the drive. I always recommend upgrading to an SSD at the same time, they're faster, more reliable, and prices have come way down.
When to Call for Help
If you've tried the simple fixes and your computer is still slow, or if you're not comfortable poking around in system settings, that's absolutely fine. I offer both in-person visits across Edinburgh (Stockbridge, Morningside, Leith, and beyond) and remote support if you're elsewhere in the UK.
Most slow computer issues can be fixed in under an hour, and I'll explain everything in plain English, no jargon, I promise.
