Edinburgh Home WiFi Problems? Here's How to Fix Them

WiFi problems are the bane of modern life. You're trying to stream a show, join a video call, or just browse the web, and your WiFi decides to pack it in. It's especially frustrating when you're paying for fast broadband but can't use it properly.

Living in Edinburgh, I've seen every WiFi problem going, from thick stone walls in New Town tenements to interference from dozens of neighbouring networks in Marchmont flats. Here's how to sort them out.

Common WiFi Problems and Quick Fixes

Problem 1: WiFi Is Fast Downstairs But Terrible Upstairs

This is classic for Edinburgh's traditional stone buildings. The thick walls and floors just eat WiFi signals for breakfast.

Solution: WiFi mesh systems are game-changers. Instead of one router trying to do everything, you have multiple units working together to cover your whole home. I typically install TP-Link Deco or Google Nest WiFi systems, they're reliable and easy to manage.

Problem 2: WiFi Keeps Dropping Out

If your WiFi connection keeps disappearing, it's often down to interference from other networks or your router being on its last legs.

Solution: Try changing your WiFi channel. Most routers default to the same channels, so you're competing with all your neighbours. I use a WiFi analyzer app to find the clearest channel. If that doesn't help, your router might need replacing.

Problem 3: WiFi Is Slow Even Though You Pay for Fast Broadband

Your broadband might be coming in at 100Mbps, but if your WiFi is slow, you won't see those speeds on your devices.

Solution: Check if your router is old. Older routers can't handle modern broadband speeds. Your provider should upgrade you to a newer model free of charge, give them a ring. If they won't help, I can recommend routers that actually work properly.

Edinburgh-Specific WiFi Challenges

Edinburgh homes come with their own unique WiFi challenges:

  • Tenement flats: Thick walls between rooms, metal lath in old ceilings. WiFi signals don't stand a chance
  • Listed buildings: Can't drill holes for ethernet cables? We work with what we've got using mesh systems and powerline adapters
  • New builds in Leith and Granton: Often come with cheap routers that can't handle all your smart devices
  • Garden offices: Need WiFi in a separate building? WiFi extenders or dedicated outdoor access points are the answer

Should You Upgrade Your Router?

If your router is more than 4–5 years old, yes. Modern routers support WiFi 6, which is faster and handles multiple devices better. They're also better at penetrating walls.

I usually recommend:

  • Small flats: A decent single router (TP-Link Archer or similar)
  • Larger homes or thick walls: Mesh WiFi system (3 units typically cover most homes)
  • Tech-heavy households: WiFi 6 mesh system for all those smart devices
